Theta Tau hosts regional conference Print E-mail
On the weekend of October 2, 2009, Theta Tau, UNC Charlotte's only Professional Engineering Fraternity on campus, hosted the biannual Theta Tau Regional Conference.

During the conference, Theta Tau chapters and colonies from all over each region gather to discuss successes and issues specific to each chapter and give each other feedback and advice. Over 200 men and women of the Atlantic Region of Theta Tau attended this semester's conference, yielding the one of the largest turnouts in the region's regionals_3history. Universities in the region include UNC Charlotte, North Carolina State, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion, George Washington, Virginia Tech, George Mason, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Maryland. During this semester's conference a new precedent was set in which chapters from outside the region attended the conference. Chapters from the University of Tennessee, University of Alabama, and Clemson all sent representatives to take part in the conference.

The weekend long conference began on Friday night with informal socializing, providing time for brothers to catch-up and meet with each other on a more personal basis. Saturday morning included a breakfast and a sports competition, where brothers worked together and had fun challenging each other playing football on the Duke Centennial Fields. After eating lunch in the courtyard at the new Student Union Center, all of the chapters gathered for the formal Regional Meeting, which was run by the Regional Directors. Theta Tau is very cregionals_1ommitted to the professional development of its brothers. Therefore to stay true to the fraternity's core values, Dr. Angela Davies, a professor in the Physics department at UNC Charlotte, was brought in to give a lecture on how to give a technical presentation, which is valuable knowledge for any of the engineering disciplines. During the meeting each chapter presented a slide show of what their chapter accomplished and struggled with during the previous semester and other chapters gave suggestions on how to solve their struggles.

After the meeting, the chapters, dressed in formal wear, gathered at the Havana Social Club and Ballroom, near Lake Norman, for the Formal Dinner. The ballroom was decorated in Theta Tau's colors of dark red and gold and petals of the jacqueminot (dark red rose), Theta Tau's flower, covered the tables. The dinner, which was catered by Family Catering Services, was followed by the Pledge Olympics. The Pledge Olympics is a game where each chapter's pledges are tested on the basic fraternity knowledge that they are required to know. The brothers of each chapter cheer on their pledges in hopes that their chapter will win.

The success of Theta Tau rests solely on the brothers that make it up. The Theta Tau Regional Conference allows brothers to utilize their support network and connect with brothers from other chapters. Colonies can come to the conference to receive help, obtain knowledge, and gain connections that will be vital in their road to becoming a chapter. It also allows brothers to network for contacts that will be useful for finding a job after college, a very valuable benefit of Theta Tau. The purpose of Theta Tau is to develop and maintain a high standard of professional interest among its members, and to unite them in a strong bond of fraternal fellowship. The Theta Tau Regional Conference exemplifies that purpose completely.
