The 2009 Senior Design Expo included more than 150 students and 30 faculty mentors presenting 50 completed projects. The Expo provided an opportunity to see how students and local companies worked together to solve engineering design problems.

Sweeping up cans and bottles with its long arms, the Lee College of Engineering’s’ IEEE robot team took ninth place out of 42 teams at the Southeastern Conference competition in 2009. Know affectionately as “Wakka” by the team, the robot’s rocking jumping movement also won it the “Most Entertaining” award, as team member Richard Blackmon explains.

UNC Charlotte has established the new Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability Center to bring university research expertise to the solving of problems that arise from the complex relationships between humans and their environment.

The William States Lee College of Engineering has named new chairmen to its departements of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science.

Students and faculty members put on their finest bowties, slicked backed their hair, taped up their glasses and dusted off their slide rules in their quests to be named Mr. Engineer at UNC Charlotte.

The Lee College of Engineering dedicated a new water tunnel on May 29. Under construction for more than a year, the tunnel holds thousands of gallons of water and took more than 5,000 man hours to build.

Purchasing agents put in the orders, suppliers provided the parts, manufacturers built the products, salesmen took the orders, truckers shipped the products, and through it all students learned to optimize supply chains. The Systems Engineering and Engineering Management students were playing a game called "TimeWise Lean Supply Chain Simulation."

In helping land his dream job with Honda, 2009 Mechanical Engineering graduate Kevin Boehm gives credit to the overall education of engineering, leadership and practical experience he got while at UNC Charlotte.
