Senior Mechanical Engineer Job Description The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work in a variety of areas related to the design of Bruker’s  Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)  product line. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be involved with the design of various sub-assemblies and integration of these modules into the overall AFM system.  Examples of the types of activities include: design of  precision stages for sample positioning; design and modal / thermal FEA modeling of components and structures; design, modeling , integration and testing of peripheral modules such as vibration control systems, acoustic enclosures, wafer loading and transport modules; and selection and qualification of new manufacturing technologies for improved product performance and cost. While the range of activities that the position may involve is large, a key area of  focus will be in the design of assemblies with precision motion and integrated imaging capability, implemented with both discrete components as well as off-the-shelf modules.

The candidate should have extensive practical experience in precision mechanical engineering along with the ability to effectively work with a wide range of personnel such as electronic, optical, and software engineers and technical marketing functions.  The position will involve most aspects of the product development process, including development of engineering specifications, design and analysis, test and characterization, and assisting in the generation of production documentation. Atomic Force Microscopes can image, characterize, manipulate, and modify the surfaces of materials down to molecular and atomic dimensions, and the mechanical design and control of such systems requires outstanding fundamental engineering skills that cover a broad range of disciplines. This is a tremendous opportunity to work at an acknowledged world leader in analytical instrumentation – Bruker – and the world leader in the field of Scanning Probe Microscopy, a major enabling tool of nanotechnology research and development. Although the ideal candidate will be an experienced engineer with several years of directly applicable experience in a commercial environment, candidates who possess extensive experience in an academic or research institution are encouraged to apply.
