Computer Support for Students

As a student of the William States Lee College of Engineering of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte you are expected to be able to use and work with a PC system. Studies and assessments have shown that computer technology skills are an integral component of all engineering disciplines. Students who own and use a PC system for their academic work are enhancing their technology skills for the 21st century. The PCS group in the College of Engineering has been set up to provide the appropriate support for COE students who own a PC system. Our goal and commitment is to do all we can to help the COE student with their personally-owned PC system. Beginning with the fall 2008 semester, the PCS Staff will provide the following services to COE students with personally owned laptops:

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose software issues with your Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Mac OS X system.  Support on Linux based systems is limited.  We will recommend a plan for you and with your approval we will proceed to address those issues. If you prefer, you can take our recommendation and follow through with these on your own.
  • Virus and malware scanning and removal
  • Limited software installation support. This is limited to the varying licenses of the individual software. For example, we can install the Trend Micro Antivirus or other campus wide licensed software. For a complete list of the software available to install please contact the PCS Help Desk.
  • Peripheral support, limited to those devices that have the appropriate drivers for the operating system.
  • Consultation on how to handle various PC responsibilities, including backing up your data or imaging your disk drive

Student Support

Dell has provided the College of Engineering (COE) with loaner laptops for students. These loaners are available in the PCS office and are available on an extended basis (up to 5 days) to any engineering student who purchased a laptop and needs a loaner while warranty work is in progress on their personal laptop. Please contact the PCS office for arranging this offer.

These loaner laptops are also available to a student who needs to have warranty work done on their laptop (any brand). If a laptop is available, PCS will provide the engineering student with a loaner laptop.

As a student in the William States Lee College of Engineering you will be exposed to software products on our Mosaic systems that are used in industry and in research. The typical software products that are used in the engineering profession are also available for free or at reduced cost for student to install on their laptops.  Please also see our Best Laptop Practices and Laptop Ownership Guide as these documents can provide some good information about buying, owning and using a laptop.  Additionally, the PCS staff will be happy to give you aid, advice, and recommendations when purchasing a new PC system.
