Freshmen Admission Requirements

engweb2011_30

Incoming freshmen can be directly admitted to their major of choice by meeting the following criteria:

Engineering Technology and Construction Management Majors

Students interested in declaring majors in the Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management must meet the general admissions requirements for UNC Charlotte.

Students who are undecided about their major may declare Engineering Technology-Undesignated. It is important that undesignated ET majors work closely with their freshman advisor to choose a major during the first year.

Engineering Majors

Students interested in declaring majors in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science, or Systems Engineering and Engineering Management must meet the general admissions requirements for UNC Charlotte and demonstrate mastery of core math concepts on the Math SAT and in high school math courses.  The average Math SAT and weighted GPA of admitted engineering majors are 600 and 3.6, respectively.

Engineering is a rigorous program of study, requiring expertise in math. Students seeking admission to an engineering major should complete a pre-calculus or calculus course in high school to prepare for college math courses. Students without a calculus background are more likely to start in remedial math, take five or more years to graduate, or risk not completing an engineering degree at all.

Students who wish to be engineering majors but do not meet the requirements will be admitted to UNC Charlotte as undeclared majors in the University College. These students can qualify for admission to the College of Engineering as sophomores by completing the freshman engineering plan of study with a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
