Week of Monday May 3, 2004
  • The notes page is updated to add the recent presentation by Mr. Ford
  • For those building/reviewing for the class assignments, see the notes page.
  • Last day of class is May 4.  It will be a review, course evaluation, and discussion of the Practical Final Exam.
  • A Final Exam will be given on May 13, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., Smith 202.
  • The Practical Final Exam (lab exercise) is due Friday, May 14, by 12:00 noon.

 

Week of Monday April 26, 2004
  • Lab 6 typo - Requirement 10 should be 1/96th of a minute.
  • Last day of class is May 4, the final is May 13.  I would like to change the final exam time.

 

Week of Monday April 19, 2004
  • There is a change to the class schedule:
    • April 22 class will be lab exercise time.
    • April 27 class will be on Zigbee (802.15.4)
  • Lab 6 is posted and is due April 27. Check out this Agilent document for Mixed Signal Scope instrument help .   Lab 6 does not require a demo.

 

Week of Monday April 12, 2004
  • Lab 5 is posted and due April 20.  Make sure to pick up supplies from the TA office (stepper motor, ULN driver).
  • Lab 6 will be posted soon and is due April 27.  Lab 6 requires use of a mixed signal scope - there is only one available for our use, and it will be here for a short time.   Lab 6 does not require a demo.
  • April 15 class will be lab exercise time and mixed signal scope demonstration.  Lab 6 requires use of a mixed signal scope - there is only one available for our use, and it will be here for a short time.
  • April 20 class will be on the hardware/software design process and project management.  Read the articles posted and the handout from class.
  • April 22 class will be on a TBD topic.
  • April 27 class will be lab exercise time and demonstration. 
  • April 29 class will be guest presentation on embedded Linux.
  • May 4 class will be on a TBD topic, including Final Exam review.

 

Week of Monday April 5, 2004
  • Lab 5 is posted and due April 20.  Motors have been ordered and should be in this week.
  • Class for April 6 is on stepper motors.  Please read the notes on stepper and servo motors. 
  • There is no class for April 8 - spend the time working on lab 4 and 5.
  • From Mark Ford:  You can orient the ADXL board perpendicular as outlined in the lab specs. The one thing you have to account for though is that one of the axis values will then be phase shifted by pi/2. So, both readings will then need to use sin(ang) as opposed to sin(ang) and cos(ang).  Question:  How can we compute sin and cosine values without using floating point numbers? The specs state to only use integer values, but I do not see how we can do this.  Dr. C replies:  Since I say that the angle is always 30 degrees or 0 degrees, you can just pre-load Sin 30 or Cos 30. When you do the computations, just "normalize" everything to "thousandths".

  • Class for April 1 is to review the test, discuss Lab 4, and discuss Lab 5.

  • No new announcements for this week

 

Week of Monday March 15, 2004
  • Class for March 18 has turned into lab time. 
  • Lab 3 is posted and now due March 23 (more time!).  Also the lab has changed to make it easier.  However, for the extension, you must show me your progress during class time on March 18.
  • There are readings available for the March 23 class.
  • Professor Conrad has one book chapter that must be reviewed by four people, available next week.  The robot described in the paper must also be built by two people (builders get credit for reviewing 4 papers).  Reviewing papers are part of the course grade.
  • Professor Conrad is running a Jr. High/High School competition for robotics for the Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 27.  It is at Johnson C. Smith University, downtown Charlotte.  If you assist (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.), you will get credit for reviewing four papers.  Transportation is provided.  Contact Dr. Conrad to volunteer.

 

Week of Monday March 1, 2004
  • The Midterm exam has been moved to March 16.
  • Professor Conrad has one paper that must be reviewed by four people - handed out 3/2, due 3/4 (noon).  Reviewing papers are part of the course grade.

 

Week of Monday February 23, 2004
  • Lab 2 is posted and due on the next day the University is open (Friday 2/27 or Monday 3/1)
  • There is no class scheduled for March 4, however the project is still due.
  • Lab 3 is posted and due March 18 (more time!).
  • There are readings posted for the March 2 class, even though Thursday 2/26 is a snow day.

 

Week of Monday February 16, 2004
  • Thursday, February 19 guest speaker is Stuart Smith.  The testing exercise will be pushed to Tuesday, 2/24.
  • Lab 2 is posted, due February 26.

  • Please read the paper/lab info by Mr. Lasassmeh and Alassaly handed out in class and be prepared to discuss on Tuesday, 1/27.
  • As announced in class, please read the Football Helmet article for the 1/22 class.  Also, read the accelerometer data sheet.
  • The first review opportunity is due Tuesday, 1/20:  Review Chapter 1 of the Stiquito Book.  Contact Dr. Conrad before you do the work (open to the first four who volunteer).
  • The second review opportunity is due Wednesday, 1/21:  Create 10 glossary entries for Chapter 1 of the new Stiquito Book.  Contact Dr. Conrad before you do the work (open to the first three who volunteer).  ( Chapter 1, Current Glossary).
  • Lab 1 will be posted by 3:00 p.m. Friday, 1/23.
  • The syllabus has been updated.
